How to Become your Spouse’s Best Friend

As I approach marriage, I wanted to post these findings that could help anyone solidify their relationships with their significant other or spouse. The easiest way to talk these out is to put yourself in a situation where you need to find your ultimate best friend. And how do you do that... you go to craigslist and post an Ad:

Actively seeking a best friend. Prospective candidate should:

  • Make me feel good about being me
  • Affirm my best qualities, especially when I am feeling insecure
  • Call out the best in me and hold me accountable to the best version of myself
  • Listen without judging and without trying to fix me
  • Give me the benefit of the doubt
  • Extend grace to me when I am grumpy or having a bad day
  • Remember my birthday and my favorite foods, activities, and music
  • Know my story and love me regardless
  • Spend time with me just because you enjoy my company
  • Speak well of me when I am not present
  • Serve me with a joyful spirit and without complaining
  • Speak the truth to me when no one else will
  • Never shame me, diminish me, or make me feel small
  • Celebrates my win
  • Becomes excited about what I am excited about
  • Laugh with me
  • When we fight, they are short-lived and we learn from it
  • Don’t try and fix it, just display empathy, make sure I do not feel alone or abnormal and remind me that everything is going to be alright

As I completed this list, I saw that it would harder for me to incorporate all these qualities at all times than to find someone that could do that for me. But I am an ambitious guy, so I will venture to try, there is no harm in trying.

I cannot take full credit for this list, its part of a series done by Mike Hyatt. If you have a couple of minutes, listen to it on youtube, you will not regret it.
