Ironman SuperFrog 70.3

I am happy to announce I finished the Ironman SuperFrog 70.3 in just under seven hours. It is a horrible time compared to all the more experienced Ironman athletes but for me, its pretty solid. San Diego was quite hot during the race with only 83 degree forecast. I was expecting a lovely day, but little did I know, the humidity was at an ungodly 94%. Lets just say it was hot, but at least it wasn't PHX hot.

The race started shortly after sunrise on the cool beach surrounding the Coronado Naval base. The water was a perfect temperature. When the cannon went off (very common military way to start a race) I was in the water chugging along with little to no problem. I finished 6th with my time in the water being pretty great comparatively. That was a great way to start the race.

When I got to the bike I took a while. I did not struggle too much to finish the distance. Near the end my knees did ache, but my muscles did not. The total bike time was around 3h30 minutes. I spent so much time on the road that my motto for the bike portion should've been "slow and steady wins the race". People zoomed by me all day with their super expensive bikes. And me, with my rental road bike for the weekend moved at a steady pace.

The hardest part of the race was the run. After a long bike portion, I really did not have the energy to run a half marathon. Also by that time in the day, the sun was at it's peak placement in the sky and it was pretty hot. I was lucky to make a running buddy. An awesome guy named Kevin who lives in Orange County and runs marathons. You can see him in the image above blowing kisses to his family as he passes by them. After four miles in, he approached me on the course and said, "hey man, looks like me and you take breaks around the same time to walk, want to finish this together to motivate each other?" I couldn't have enjoyed his company more.

Over all, I do not think I will do another Ironman for a while, possibly never again. I loved the challenge but now that it is over, I think I might find my new thrills elsewhere, probably something movie marathon related, so that I can sit on the couch for a while and recover.
